The Annunciation by Francesco di Valdambrino
In the room is a masterpiece of early 15th-century Sienese wooden sculpture: the Annunciation by Francesco di Valdambrino, renowned for his skill in working with wood. Trained in the workshop of Piero d'Angelo, the father of Jacopo della Quercia, the statues of the Angel and the Virgin, originating from the local church of San Lorenzo and dated to 1411, are considered the pinnacle of his art due to the realistic rendering of the faces and the details of the clothing. The figures, characterized by elegance and movement, show influences from International Gothic, such as Ghiberti's sculpture and Gentile da Fabriano's painting.
