The archaic majolica
In 2015, during archaeological investigations in the historic center of Asciano, two medieval cesspits were discovered, used for waste disposal. The pits yielded around 15,000 ceramic fragments, dating from the 14th to the 19th century, providing important clues about local production. Displayed in the room's showcases are significant archaic maiolica pieces from the 14th and 15th centuries, decorated with typical Sienese motifs such as trilobed leaves, as well as Orvietan and high-Lazio patterns. A jug depicting a bird cleaning its foot is, on the other hand, a unique and original example of Asciano's local production.
