The Crucifix of Giovanni Pisano

Zoom in to full screen

The Crucifix, dated around 1290, comes from the pulpit of the Church of Sant'Agostino in Asciano and, after its restoration in 1982, has been definitively attributed to Giovanni Pisano. Made of carved and polychrome walnut wood, the body of Christ appears arched and angular, with the head tilted and the hair in locks. The work is not made from a single piece of wood; instead, the wood is assembled, with the back hollowed out later for conservation purposes. The sculpture exhibits techniques similar to another crucifix found in Pisa in 1986 near the tomb of Bishop Pannocchieschi d'Elci.
