The kelebe of the “Painter of Asciano”
Found in tomb III of the Poggio Pinci necropolis near Asciano, the kelebe (or column-krater) was produced in the second half of the 4th century BC in a Volterra workshop linked to the "painter of Hesione." Scholars have attributed the vase to a ceramist they have nicknamed the "painter of Asciano," as his style was first recognized in this particular piece. The krater features, on its neck, human profiles flanked by horse heads, while the body depicts Dionysian scenes.
