This route takes you through the heart of the Crete Senesi, showcasing natural geosites, breathtaking views, and charming villages. Each stop provides a fresh perspective on this extraordinary region, ready to captivate you with its natural beauty and rich history.
Cosa vedrai durante il percorso:
It’s a protected natural area, made up of Biancane: small white domes formed of clay dating back to the Pliocene era! These are a very rare and scenic form of erosion, characteristic of this territory.
Walking among the Biancane means entering a world where past and present blend in a unique visual and sensory experience! This is a landscape that tells an ancient, profound story, where the hand of man intertwines with the forces of Nature!
Created in 1993 by artist Jean-Paul Philippe, the Site Transitoire sits in the most iconic spot of the Crete Senesi and is composed of three main elements: a chair, a sarcophagus, and a window, all interacting with each other and with nature, reaching a peak of expression during the Summer Solstice. Within "La Bottega," located in the heart of Asciano, the artist has gathered the story of his sculpture and the artistic encounters it has inspired over the years. It is also where he works and welcomes friends and visitors during his Italian stays.
From this panoramic viewpoint, you’ll find yourself before an endless landscape, an expanse stretching in every direction. It’s a tyranny of horizons, gently compelling you to lose yourself in the waves of rolling hills that extend as far as the eye can see.
The Abbey, built primarily of brick, stands majestically in the heart of a dense forest, creating an atmosphere of great solemnity. Founded in 1319 by three noblemen from Siena—Bernardo Tolomei, Patrizio Patrizi, and Ambrogio Piccolomini—this structure embodies a profound desire for a simple and contemplative life. The three nobles decided to leave behind the luxury and wealth of their city lives and chose the "Podere di Acona" as their spiritual "desertum."
From this panoramic viewpoint, an unforgettable sight unfolds before you: the view of the world’s most famous cypress trees!
One of the most iconic symbols of Asciano. The sixteenth-century civic tower, with its ancient clock that keeps time with unchanged precision, stands out among the rooftops of the village. At its base, a fountain adorned with a Gorgon head captures the attention of passersby. Its enigmatic gaze seems to hold a secret, inviting anyone who walks by to stop and drink. But there’s an unwritten pact: anyone who accepts the invitation and drinks from this fountain is destined to return to Asciano!
