This loop trail is a chance to discover the Biancane of Leonina!

One of the most iconic natural features of the Crete Senesi, the Biancane Geosite of Leonina, awaits you on this short trail, guiding you through an unforgettable landscape. This itinerary is part of the Crete Senesi Life Park, a growing open park created to showcase the best of Asciano’s territory.

During summer, it’s best to walk this trail during the cooler hours. Remember to bring water and a hat for sun protection. After rain, be cautious: the clay terrain of the Crete Senesi can become slippery and quite muddy!

Cosa vedrai durante il percorso:

The Geosite of the Biancane of Leonina
Nature

It’s a protected natural area, made up of Biancane: small white domes formed of clay dating back to the Pliocene era! These are a very rare and scenic form of erosion, characteristic of this territory.

Walking among the Biancane means entering a world where past and present blend in a unique visual and sensory experience! This is a landscape that tells an ancient, profound story, where the hand of man intertwines with the forces of Nature!

Site Transitoire by Jean-Paul Philippe
Art

Created in 1993 by artist Jean-Paul Philippe, the Site Transitoire sits in the most iconic spot of the Crete Senesi and is composed of three main elements: a chair, a sarcophagus, and a window, all interacting with each other and with nature, reaching a peak of expression during the Summer Solstice. Within "La Bottega," located in the heart of Asciano, the artist has gathered the story of his sculpture and the artistic encounters it has inspired over the years. It is also where he works and welcomes friends and visitors during his Italian stays.
