Dating back to the 13th century, this church is an emblematic example of Franciscan architecture, reflecting the values of simplicity and humility cherished by St. Francis of Assisi. The adjacent convent, now divided into private residences, still shows traces on the facades surrounding the ancient cloister. The church preserves frescoes and various artworks, including a Madonna and Child by the Della Robbia family; other masterpieces are displayed at the Palazzo Corboli Museum.

A Veil of Mystery

The origins of the church are shrouded in mystery and legend. Some 18th-century manuscripts recall a document from 1212 in which the people of Asciano are said to have donated the site to the Franciscans for their convent. However, the lack of concrete evidence raises doubts among scholars. But could it be a coincidence that 1212 also marks St. Francis of Assisi’s first stay in Siena?

Simplicity and Humility

The Church of St. Lawrence embodies the principles of Franciscan architecture, reflecting the simplicity and humility of the order. Its facade, framed by corner pilasters, features a portal that invites visitors to enter and be enveloped by the site’s mystical atmosphere. Inside, one is struck by the spacious, welcoming interior.

Rediscovered Art

At one time, every wall inside was covered with frescoes that told stories of faith and devotion, now partially revealed thanks to restorations in the 1980s. These vivid images bring the past to life. The church also houses a valuable polychrome terracotta altarpiece, attributed to the Della Robbia masters: a Madonna and Child surrounded by angels and saints. Some of the artworks that once adorned this church are now preserved in the Palazzo Corboli Museum, where visitors can admire beautiful altarpieces and wooden sculptures.
